M A Z D A C O S M O "The three bodies"

Mazda certainly spared no expense with the HB series providing 3 different body styles. Something not done before & they haven't done since. The 2 door coupe gave the driver a feeling of personal styling that said "I'm important". (Remembering that these cars were expensive in there day) The 4 door hardtop which could be likened to a 4 door version of the coupe had similar flair but was appealing to the more practical man. Finally, the 4 door sedan. A totally different body, it was marketed as the limousine of the series with it more conservative interior / exterior design. Mazda found it's appeal went more to the mature generation. The sedan version was dropped in 86 for the HC series Luce of 86-91.

From 86-88 the coupe & hardtop was available only with the 12A turbo option or the 2lt efi as the carby powered 12A SPI engine simply couldn't "cut-it" for the now-entrenched EFI age.
