Side protection was well catered for aswell. Intrusion bars within the doors assisted greatly in reducing foreign object impact. Note the crash test cars have factory sunroofs fitted as they are seen to weaken integrity. (Sunroofs never made it to the showroom floor) The sheer mass of the Cosmo absorbs most impact damage, combined with strategically creased paneling, the strength is significantly increased over a straight paneled vehicle.

Rear end protection was excellent with not only the crumple zones taking the force but the seats themselves are strong (& heavy) enough to prevent collapsing under the stress of a multi G-force impact. Thick padded head rests prevent any whip lash as the head isn't bounced off as harder versions would allow. Personally, this author has witnessed a rear / side impact at high speed into a solid wall. The (foolish) drivers comments on exiting the Cosmo was that the seats absorbed all the bodily impact as he went in backwards. Not even a scratch despite hitting hard at around 70km/h.

One fear of any production car during a roll over is the roof collapsing & severly injuring or killing the occupants. Mazda installed a great deal of strength into the Cosmo body & it showed up during testing. At the base of the C-pillars the quadruple skin box design (3-layers + 1 layer) give superior strength the the roof supports preventing collapse. The A-pillars employ a multi layered box corrogated box design again for extra strength. To date, no reports of a Cosmo rolling have been received but as the crash test pics show, the Cosmo holds up well in testing.

Some deformation of the left side roof can be seen in the picture but it would be minor. Occupant protection would not be compromised & the seat belts would latch quickly preventing the body from thrashing about. Importantly, the roof does not cave in & lives are preserved. There are distinct advantages to owning top level luxury touring cars compared to budget boxes......
